Tips and tricks for Gutter Cleaning
There are several responsibilities at home that make you feel as if you have really done something, giving you a feeling of tremendous fulfillment and joy. Cleaning the gutters is not one of them. Unfortunately, this is a duty that still has to be performed, whether it is satisfactory or not. And if you have to do something, you might as well do it right. Therefore, we have tips for better gutter cleaning.
Why clean the gutters?
Your gutters are the most effective way to drain water flowing from the roof to places far from the foundations of the house. This helps prevent problems such as wet tank spaces and washing out foundations, among others. Avoiding gutters means opening your home to several different structural hazards, so in the long run, it’s better to just learn how to clean them properly.
Unfortunately, many people don’t realize that this is a job that needs to be done regularly and that the gutter guards are not superfluous. Yes, you read that right; if you have gutter guards you still need to clean these gutters once or twice a year. The gutter guards prevent large solids from settling in the gutters, but they have to be cleaned themselves, and any debris that has accumulated in the gutter itself still needs to be washed away to prevent build-up.
How to clean the gutters?
Cleaning the gutters is a fairly simple activity, but many people try to make it difficult. Your goal should be to get as much rubbish as possible out of the gutter itself without sending it to the downpipe where plugs easily form and are difficult to remove. Follow this sequence for the best success:
Work with horns. Always remove debris from corners and downspouts towards the center of the gutter. If you do it any other way, you run the risk of dragging the material down the drainpipes and creating blockages that are not fun to remove.

Pull out the center. Then remove the debris inside and remove as much as possible while you are at it. Don’t count on flushing it down the drain pipe as this may contribute to the aforementioned blockages. Use your hand, a trowel, or one of the many spoons to clean the gutters and drop the garbage in the bucket or drop it onto the tarpaulin on the ground.
Check your elbows. The elbows are a great place for clogs to form, so check that all the elbows in the gutter are fine. If there is a blockage, you can clean it with a blast of water from a garden hose. Larger blockages may require a washing machine or plumber to break free.
After cleaning the gutters, run some water through them with a hose to make sure they are not leaking anywhere. This is the best time to repair them as they are fairly clean and will be easier to handle.
If you have areas that are leaking, apply some sealant or replace the section, depending on the cause of the leak. This is also a great time to install some kind of gutter guard if you are interested in them. Remember that the gutter guards still need cleaning, but tend to protect better from blockages so they still serve their purpose.
